To make winter safer - Anna Pasek Foundation testing the newest technologies
Anna Pasek Foundation in cooperation with the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research in Davos as the first institution in Carpathian-Sudeten countries is testing the newest technologies which help to determine locations of avalanche-threatened areas.
Avalanche statistics carried by avalanche rescue and warning services show that each year in massifs of the Sudeten and Carpathian Mountains die few to several people. During a still ongoing winter season 2009/2010 only in Polish Tatra Mountains 8 people were killed. On those territories avalanches also cause significant infrastructural and environmental damages. A lot of avalanches still come as a surprise by occurring in places once considered to be safe.

The agreement signed by Paweł Chrustek - the Foundation's chairman and Leszek Nowogrodzki- director of ESRI Polska concerns cooperation connected with widely apprehended activity in the area of promotion of GIS (Geographical Information System).
Integrated actions should contribute to more effective activities of the Foundation, not only in context of promoting those technologies within scientific environments, but also in the fields of actions connected with enhancing safety in mountains.

The grand opening of the Alpine Training Base - Pragelato.

The day of 29th of September 2009 was particularly important to our Foundation. In the Italian olympic village of Pragelato, we have officially opened our first Alpine Training Base.

After just a year since the start of this project, we opened the door to a place, which will help us accomplish the main goal of the Foundation - increasing safety of the mountain exploration activities.

The project became one more proof for great determination and successfulness of our team. It also proved that activities leading to cooperation and integration of institutions and communities connected with mountain safety, are effective and efficient.

Such initiative brought a chance to gather outstanding representatives of science, mountain rescue services, local government and business communities at the Alpine Training Base grand opening.

We were proud to play host to the representatives of: The Local Authorities of Pragelato and Sestriere; Jagiellonian University in Cracow, Institute of Geography and Spatial Management; Agricultural University in Cracow, Faculty of Forestry, Lab of GIS & RS; Italian Mountain Rescue Services - Soccorso Alpino Stazione Pragelato - Sestriere and Guardia di Finanza of the Bardonecchia region; French Mountain Rescue Service - Gendarmerie de Haute Montagne PGHM from Chamonix; Polish Volunteer Mountain Rescue Service (GOPR); The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management in Cracow; Alpenverein; ESRI Polska and Navteq companies; other mountain activities enthusiasts and our friends.

All guests who responded to our invitation demonstrated support and willingness to cooperate to the Foundation tasks and ideas. They came to Pragelato to help us keep up the spirit of what has been started after the tragic accident in July 2007.

I would like to thank warmly especially all our Founders - Mrs and Mr Grazyna and Marek Pasek, Mr Fabrizio Cozzi, for founding the Alpine Training Base. I would also like to thank all the honourable guests for participating in the grand opening ceremony, Foundation' employees and volunteers, for their hard work and all others who contributed, making possible our Foundation to carry out this project and to operate at the highest organizational and skill level.

Paweł Chrustek

We support the development of modern science in Poland
The knowledge of contemporary global changes of the environment is highly based on the information collected by the satellites. Satellite remote sensing plays an important role in the analysis of the atmosphere and its constant observation for the meteorological purposes. Being aware of the importance of the orbital observations in modern science and everyday life, Anna Pasek Foundation together with Department of Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Cartography and Remote Sensing at the Institute of Geography and Spatial Management, and Chair of Climatology of the Faculty of Earth Science at University of Silesia are organising the first Polish Satellite Climatology Workshops KlimSat2009.

Foundation scholarship granted
First edition of the Anna Pasek Scholarship competition has been finished. Because of the high factual knowledge and great passion of the candidates for their work, it was difficult to short list them to the further stage of the contest. Stanisława Porzycka (University of Science and Technology AGH) and Michał Posyniak (University of Warsaw) presented the highest level among all candidates. That is why a decision was made concerning splitting the sum of the scholarship in half and granting both of the candidates with the amount of EUR 6000. We congratulate the winners and encourage the rest of the contestants to take part in the next editions of the contest. The submission of the research papers for the next edition will be held in spring 2009. Further details will be enclosed on the Foundation page.

Scholarship adjudication
Due to a large number of inquiries and high level of factual knowledge of the candidates, the Foundation has prolonged the deadline of the first stage of the contest. It is mainly because we need to create an objective ranking of the candidates considering subject discrepancy. Because this year we grant only one scholarship we want to make sure we will evaluate the papers in the best possible way. At the same time we assure that the candidates who will successfully qualify to the second stage of the contest (an interview) will be informed about it until 18th December (the deadline) in order to agree on the term of the contest interview.
