Secure mountain exploration

Polski English Italiano

"ll those who go climbing very often or have done it for a long time
must be prepared for an accident to happen, sooner or later,
to themselves or someone else."

(from the Polish edition of 'Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills')

One of Ania's major passions was mountaineering. She went climbing both in low and high mountains as well as in broadly understood polar regions. Ania's last trip had a tragic ending for her and her two Friends. As the weather broke down, they were caught in an avalanche which caused many injuries and prevented them from descending to a shelter. Ania and her Friends paid the ultimate price for their love of the mountains, and the mountains showed their might once again.

Accidents occur in low, medium and, above all, high mountains, where potential dangers abound. Accidents happen to hillwalkers and mountaineers with varying degrees of experience, as well as professionals for whom the mountains have become a way of life. All accidents, especially those which involve paying the ultimate price, bring great pain and an extreme feeling of loss. This feeling of loss is very often related to young talents who could have achieved a lot in their lives. This reflection brought us to establish the Anna Pasek Foundation - one of its primary objectives is 'Prevention, information and promotion in the field of secure mountain exploration with a special emphasis on high-altitude and polar exploration'.

The aim of this area of our activity is to minimize the mountain and polar accident rate to the greatest possible extent through comprehensive education and direct assistance. We are planning to teach people how to avoid accidents in the mountains and how to behave in critical situations so as to increase the odds of self-rescue actions as much as possible.

The rich mountaineering and scientific experience of our members commends us to providing mountain and polar education by sharing scientific knowledge and technologies for practical needs, thus significantly helping to improve the level of security in the mountains.

In line with integration of different environments, the Foundation pursues its mountain and polar objectives in cooperation with mountain rescue teams, warning service teams, mountain guides, outstanding climbers and academic circles. We believe that providing an opportunity to join forces will enable all of us to achieve the best possible results of our common efforts.

Our first project in this area 'Geographic information for secure high-altitude exploration' is a test project consisting in providing training to a climbing team going on an expedition to the Himalayas. The project includes, first of all, recognizing objective dangers, using GPS equipment and digital maps and administering first aid. Climbers will receive safeguarding equipment. All this is possible due to cooperation with the Voluntary Mountain Rescue Service (GOPR) rescue teams, academic circles of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Management of the Jagiellonian University, weather and avalanche forecast specialists from the Polish Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (imgW) and Tatra mountain guides.

In the future, we will be pursuing our objectives through a system of trainings open to all:

  1. Avalanche training,

  2. GPS training,

  3. First aid with elements of self-rescue and others.

We also intend to provide factual assistance regarding mountain and polar security, organization of expeditions (e.g. assistance in finding and funding mountain guides) and providing equipment (on a loan basis) to leisure climbers and professional mountaineers.

If you need help with issues described above or can offer help in pursuing these objectives please contact us at fundacja@annapasek.org
